Healing Begins in the Mind

It has been said before that you cannot heal in the same environment that made you sick. I would actually like to offer an alternative perspective to this idea. I believe that you cannot heal with the same unhealthy mind that allowed you to get sick’.


NB: Now, for all intents and purposes, I’m using the word “sick” to mean unhealthy, so I’m not just referring to physical health. I’m referring to the 5 categories of health that I discuss in my book.


I believe that improving your mental environment is more important than just changing your physical environment. It’s easier said than done, yes, but the hard work must be done nonetheless.


Let’s say you grew up in a toxic family household, for instance. You may come of age where you can make the choice to move out and move on.


But does moving out mean that the toxic patterns of behaviour that become ingrained within you suddenly disappear?


No.


You still have to do the work to unlearn unhealthy habits that will enable you to attract and keep healthy relationships in your life.


Granted, your physical environment can affect your mindset, but I believe that with enough effort and commitment the potential to heal is there.


You are not just a product of your environment.


You have the power to change and create change through your own mindset and actions. Because ultimately, your mindset determines the outcomes you get in life.


If you restrict yourself to believing that your healing can ONLY begin once you physically change environment, you are absolving yourself of responsibility for your own circumstance AND you are only holding yourself back.


I suppose the caveat to my argument is that your environment isn’t having an immediate and/or directly negative effect on your physical health e.g. toxic particles.


You can start healing your mindset even if you are “stuck” in a particular environment and you can start by simply paying attention to your thought and state of mind.


As a single term, this is referred to as metacognition. You are observing your own mental processes and making use of these observations.


Through this, you are beginning to take your life into your own hands, and as you consciously make small changes to your thinking, you may actually begin to heal yourself. It may even enable you to find a way to leave from an environment that you once believed you were “stuck” in.
