Have you ever wondered why no matter how badly you want to achieve a goal you just struggle to get it done?
I’ll tell you why:
Your mind is only as effective as your ability to control it. In reality, your mind is much more powerful than you may realise. It’s just that the piece of the puzzle you’re missing is: focus. Unless you know how to focus, your goals will forever be out of reach, because scattered mind power is tantamount to having no mind power.
To focus is much easier said than done, and does take time to practise and eventually master. As you try to do so you may get inconsistent results. You may be successful at achieving some goals and unsuccessful at others.
Now, these goals can be anything from completing one task on your to-do list to working for a qualification. Either way, focus could be the number one factor standing between you and your goal.
What can often make it difficult us to focus are our emotions. Our thoughts can make us think in extremes; either fantasising or catastrophising. This type of exaggerative thinking can lead to unnecessary emotional stress, anxiety or disappointment later on. This is where focusing or, more accurately, fixating on ideas not rooted in reality can be detrimental.
At the other end of the spectrum, when we are careless with our thoughts, we underestimate the weight they carry in our lives. Out of all the things in life, our thoughts are one of the few things that are within our control. Failing to acknowledge their true power can actually lead us into confusion and victimhood.
Why?
Because we are unknowingly creating or feeding our own negative reality, while attributing things to luck or happenstance.
So what can you do to turn things around to work in your favour?
As I mentioned before : when it comes to harnessing your mind power, focus is your friend, and there are several ways that you can build this muscle.
I’ll share a few with you:
1) Meditate
There are so many different ways of meditating and I’m not here to debate which is best. I am, however, going to support the common practice of observing silence.
Whether it be zeroing in on a singular thought or concept or just allowing your mind to wander, while embracing a less stimulating environment, meditating is a great way to strengthen your focus.
Through this practice you are forced to direct your attention inwards and tune out external stimuli – and this is exactly what is required of you when you focus.
2) Stop multi-tasking!
We usually pride ourselves on our ability to multi-task and flip back and forth between more than one thing. However, this can severely impair our ability to focus.
When we constantly multi-task, we are inadvertently training ourselves to quickly become bored or dissatisfied with completing singular tasks. We are also practising keeping our thoughts scattered and spread between several tasks.
It may seem that you’re “killing two birds with one stone”, but it’s more likely that giving your undivided attention to one task at a time would get them done faster.
Give it a try!
Of course, I’m sure there are other ways to improve your ability to focus, but as you explore these methods consistently, it is important for you to remember that with great power comes great responsibility. Therefore, you must put in the effort before expecting big results.
