Are you being toxic?

2 min read

When we talk about toxic people, we usually point the finger at others and think about all the times we’ve been wronged in the past, but rarely do we consider whether we might have been the toxic one.

The fact is we are not always the victim. There are times when we are actually the problem in certain situations and we have to be able to recognise this.

This is the first step to improving - identifying the type of person you are based on the impact you have on yourself and on others.

Realising that you’re a toxic person is not the end of the world, but it is the beginning of a journey.

The shame and guilt that comes with this realisation can be extremely disheartening, but you shouldn’t be dismayed. These emotions are actually a sign that you have the desire and capacity to be better.

You shouldn’t allow these emotions to deter you from living your life, but the worst thing you could possibly do is to go back to being blind.

There is a big difference between self-acceptance and complacency.

Self-acceptance is dealing with the reality of where you are at this moment in time. The purpose of self-acceptance is to have a starting point. It is the beginning of your journey towards growth. Self-acceptance involves being compassionate and understanding of self.

Complacency, on the other hand, is saying “this is just how I am” and doing absolutely nothing about it, regardless of the chaos it brings into your life. This attitude blocks your character development, stunts your growth and repels healthy relationships.

Ignoring a problem never makes it go away, it only allows it to get worse.

What makes it easier to arrive at a place of self-acceptance is figuring out how you got to this point, how you became this person.

Once you know how you got here, it’s less of a colossal tsk to figure out how to become the person you really want to be.
