It's all well and good to be able to identify and avoid the toxic people in our lives, but what about when we're the one that's toxic?

Here are some signs that YOU may, in fact, be the toxic one...

1) People act differently around you 👀

You may notice that people seem relaxed, bubbly and happy when they interact with each other, but when you enter the picture all the fun ceases.

Suddenly, the smiles and eye contact feel forced, the atmosphere becomes tensely awkward and you're not sure what you have done or said wrong (or maybe you are).

It's because people have become highly sensitive to your changes in mood. They recognise that you are not emotionally safe for them to be around.

Perhaps because of your tendency to quickly judge, criticise or overreact, they are not willing to risk getting on your bad side.

2) You're irritable or quick to anger 😡

As you move through your day, minor inconveniences cause great shifts in your mood. You're essentially an emotional landmine - anything can set you off, no matter how subtle.

You may not notice it, but this greatly affects those around you in a negative way, especially those closest to you.

Your volatile mood creates a tense atmosphere that makes them walk on eggshells.

3) Negativity bias 😒

You live in your head A LOT, making assumptions, jumping to conclusions and manufacturing problems that simple communication could solve.

You even make decisions and punish others for your own misguided perceptions.

Without even noticing, this causes a huge strain on many of your relationships, because rather than relating directly with the other person, you are holding on to an idea of them, then interacting with them based on their inability to live up to your unspoken expectations.

4) You're self absorbed 🤳🏿

What you expect from others versus what you are willing to do for them differs greatly.

While you expect them to give you their time, energy and attention, you're not willing to put in the same amount of effort to reciprocate.

You may want someone to be available whenever you call them for advice or a favour, but as soon as the shoe is on the other foot, you're suddenly not available for them.

Relationships are a give and take.

If you're the one who's always taking and rarely giving back, then you just might be the toxic one.
