Signs you're dealing with someone toxic

We end up with toxic people in our lives when we cannot identify them and distinguish them from healthy individuals.
Here are some signs that you are dealing with a toxic individual...
1) You feel like you're performing around them 🎭
Toxic people have this way of making others feel like they are constantly being judged. Whether it's in the subtle glances of contempt or critical comments, toxic people make you feel like you're performing for them.
Their mere presence will have you overanalysing every word you say, your tone, how you present yourself, even down to what you think! It almost paralyses your ability to think straight.
Before you know it, you'll have a specific personality (or mask) that you feel forced wear when they're around. Everytime they walk into the room, you shrink - you don't feel comfortable being your full, authentic self in their presence.
2) They don't REALLY care 😒
When you watch how a toxic person moves, you'll notice that despite their best efforts to uphold their pretense, they don't care about much.
What they really care about is the opportunity to serve themselves, what will make their own life easier and who can help them accomplish those goals.
So you may see them being kind and helpful to others, but there is always a reason behind it, even if it's not clear at the time.
Their seemingly positive actions lack true feeling behind them. They don't really care if you getting you the gift makes you happy, but it will make them seem like a good person to everybody watching.
More often than not, you'll find their kindness to be very strategic in nature and always points back to self-service.
3) Their jokes 😂🫵🏿
Some toxic people can be quite charismatic; they know how to keep people interested and make them laugh.
But sometimes you'll find yourself at the butt end of some their jokes, especially if they want to get closer to you.
This can often be an early warning sign that you have become their target, because this is how they test the waters.
How you respond to this subtle disrespect tells them whether you're a realistic target for their manipulation; and that's a different discussion entirely.
But, ultimately, a person who operates in this way is a definitely toxic.
4) Everything is a transaction 🤲🏿
Toxic people don't do anything for free, no matter how it may seem.
If they do something for you (no matter how small), you can guarantee that they'll be back to cash in on that favour in the future.
It could be the next day, it could be weeks from then, but sooner or later they'll ultimately expect you to give back more than what they gave you.
For them, helping others is what you do to build social credit rather than character.
Healthy people do positive things without keeping score or expecting more in return. They help people because that is who they are, that is what they genuinely WANT to do.
A person who keeps track of everything they do for you and doesn't hesitate to remind you as soon as you dare to say 'no' to them is a very toxic person.
