Your fortress of peace

Peace and war seem like opposites, but peace is in fact a war.

It is a war against chaos itself.

And, to be specific here, I am talking about the peace we look for inside of ourselves.

There are so many Threats to Your Inner Peace (click to read blog) that trying to achieve that balanced internal state is inherently a battle.

You cannot simply wait for peace to arrive.

If you do, you’re basically allowing chaos to reign until peace just “finds” you somehow in the midst of the madness that has become your life.

There is nothing proactive about waiting for life to deal you a favourable hand.

How you feel shouldn’t be constantly dictated by the circumstances in your life. You can feel exactly how you want yourself to feel, regardless of what is going on around you, and it all starts by you consciously choosing peace.

Peace is not a destination; rather it is something you CHOOSE to carry with you after you have taken the time to build it up piece-by-piece (or peace by peace 😉).

You must have systems and structures in place that safeguard your inner peace.

These systems and structures are the non-negotiable rules of engagement that guide your relationships with others and with yourself in a way that guarantees a minimum level of peace.

The boundaries, habits, standards and expectations you hold within your life are the systems I refer to.

These are some examples of systems that can help to protect your peace:

Boundaries with yourself – e.g. not allowing yourself to ruminate, no reflecting on anything for more than 10 minutes

Boundaries with others – e.g. stopping any of your friends from coming to you with gossip and drama

Habits – e.g. starting your day with 15 minutes of silence and self-reflection before tending to anything else

Standards – e.g. not having any friends that bring out lesser versions of you

Expectations of yourself – e.g. expecting yourself to be consistent with following your habits on a daily basis

Expectations of others – e.g. expecting your family to respect your space when you need some time to yourself

By setting creating and adhering to your personal systems, you are turning peace into a lifestyle rather than a luxury.

Together, these elements create a fortress around your life that protects your peace through all of life’s storms.

You just have to be willing to put in the work.

Love this, Safiya! You're so right, we do have to fight for our peace. You cannot simply wait for peace to arrive. How you feel shouldn’t be constantly dictated by the circumstances in your life. You can feel exactly how you want yourself to feel regardless of what is going on around you and it all starts by you consciously choosing peace. You're such an emotionally intelligent young lady. I'm so grateful we've crossed paths.
