Why peace feels abstract to you

Peace sounds wonderful, but when our lives have been devoid of it for so long, it may not feel entirely comfortable at first. Here's why...
1) Normalised dysfunction
When you have been raised in an environment that has normalised dysfunctional, chaotic behaviour, your nervous system becomes programmed to believe that any hint of calm is just the prequel to an inevitable storm.
EXAMPLE: A person from a household in which passive aggressive tension controls the atmosphere can make a home filled with peace and happiness actually feel strange and ominous to them.
2) Too much pressure
Enduring constant stress for a prolonged period of time conditions you to expect more work, more responsibilities and no rest or reward.
Over time, rather than peace being your well-deserved solace, it carries with it heavy feelings of guilt, and shame.
EXAMPLE: Trading a high-pressure job for one with lower expectations may intend to relieve stress, but your mind may take some time to adapt. You may still overthink and stress over every potential outcome and frequently fear the worst.
3) You don't like yourself
When you don't spend much time understanding who you are, you can end up not liking who you think you are. You watch others and compare your lesser self to what you believe to be the "better" version of others.
Instead of embracing internal peace, your inner critic impishly runs around, destroying any concept of self-acceptance by occupying your mind with endless insecurities and inadequacies.
4) No me-time
When your attention is constantly occupied by the external, you rarely have time to slow down and truly reconnect with self.
Peace comes from within.
The less time you spend with yourself, the more your peace is being stolen.
