Discernment is not an easy skill to cultivate, so beware of the following threats that may hinder you...
1) Avoidance 🙈
You won't know what to bring into your life and what to stave away unless you know what is out there in the world. And your won't know what's out there unless you have some of your own experiences.
The worst thing you can do is completely shelter from the outside world and call that protection.
You have to be careful not to mistake isolation for protection.
2) Desires 😛
When something doesn't appeal to you, it's easy to be discerning and protect yourself from it.
BUT when someone or something looks enticing on the outside it can be a lot more tempting to ignore your discernment.
3) Unhealed trauma 💔
When past experiences have scarred you deeply, it's natural to develop a certain view of the world for future protection.
However, the view we may develop of ourselves and other people is often marred by these bitter experiences in a way that is unhealthy.
These ideas post a threat to our developing discernment, because our can be difficult to see past what hurt us.
We have to be brave enough to detach ourselves from the pain of the past an be see everything with fresh eyes.
4) Upbringing 🤱🏿
How we were trained to see the world from childhood, as well as the values we were raised with have the biggest impact on our perception.
Often these lessons were passed down to us from people who have their own unhealed traumas and experiences.
But discernment is different for everybody.
We can share tips to improve discernment, but it will never be the exact same between any two individuals.
Discernment is built through your own experiences.
Witnessing a lack of discernment or a pattern of unhealthy behaviour when you're most impressionable can actually create more confusion as your get older.
There's also the risk of you learning to allow the wrong things into your life and chase away the good.
