Resilience is a choice

We’ve all demonstrated resilience at some point in the past, whether we were aware of it or not.
For some reason or another, we pushed through whatever discomfort was presented to us and chose to bounce back.
That is the key: understanding that resilience is a choice.
In the past you may have decided to endure temporary discomfort in pursuit of a greater goal, or because the alternative simply would not have been favourable.
This is a great example of resilience.
You adjusted your mindset in order to adapt to the circumstances you were presented with and this is exactly what resilience is all about.
Resilience is a mindset. It is the decision you make to move forward in life, regardless of what is thrown at you.
The unfortunate reality is that many of us think this is our mindset, but we only believe it as long as life doesn’t get too difficult for us.
We think, “I’ll be fine...as long as I don’t lose a loved one...as long as I don’t lose my house... as long as I get to reach my goals...”
But life doesn’t work around your level of comfort.
Life can pull the rug out from underneath you without any notice at all.
You have to make a promise to yourself that no matter what happens to you, no matter how unbearable life gets, you can and you will endure.
It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If you believe you can handle anything, you will. If you think you’ve been given more than you can handle, then you’ll crumble under the pressure.
It all begins with a choice.
If you are one of the people who truly, truly believe that there is nothing in life they cannot handle, then your mindset must be fortified by daily action.
Your mind can only be strong enough to hold this belief if you do the daily work to strengthen it.
It’s easy for small things to slowly chip away at your mind. If it goes unnoticed or unchecked, this mental attrition could cause you to spiral, which can be incredibly difficult to recover from.
Your mind is your only defence, so certain consistent actions must be taken in order to build and maintain that mental fortitude.
These actions may include affirmations, positive self-talk and emotional maintenance strategies (ref. pg 34 Original Vol) – anything that will help you remove emotional and mental residue and keep you stable enough to bounce back from any situation.
As long as you’re willing to put in the work, I assure you: you will be able to handle anything.
