How do you balance success?

Updated: Jan 9

In order to succeed in whatever it is that you’re doing in life, you will be required to sacrifice.

Whether you have to sacrifice your time and energy or even your relationships, you will have to give something up.

But when does your sacrifice actually become a loss?

When is this “success” you’re aspiring to achieve actually not worth the weight of your sacrifice anymore?

I’ll tell you: it’s when your efforts begin to upset the equilibrium in your life. It’s when you can see that the long-term pursuit and success in the name of this one endeavour will likely lead to many failures and the dismantling of the important foundations of your life in the long run.

A prime example of this is building a career or business in order to be financially stable.

Of course, this takes hard work, dedication and commitment. However, it goes too far when you neglect your health, your relationships, your children etc.

In the short-term, there is nothing wrong with building up momentum in order to get yourself ahead. But in the long-term, when you weigh up the consequences of consistent late nights, early mornings, no sleep, no down time, no family time, no peace, that can be most detrimental.

You have to remember that nothing lasts forever.

So as well as cherishing what you are working to build, you should cherish the things and people around you have already put the work into building.

You have to think about the long game.

To touch on my example again: what use is a thriving career if you don’t even have enough health to sustain it? What use is a lot of money if you don’t even have the friends and family around to share it with you?

It’s not about what you focus on, it’s about the percentage of effort you are investing in it, what areas of your life are you extracting from in order to do so and whether it will be worth in the far future.

Sustainability is the goal.

Peace is the goal.

Balance is the goal.

Don’t compare yourself to others who you think have everything.

No one has EVERYTHING.

Everyone has had to make choices for where they are and have had to make sacrifices along the way.

You have the ability to make choices and sacrifices just like everybody else.

But your journey now has to reflect what you really want, and most of all NEED, in the future.

I know, it’s a lot easier said than done, but put things into perspective for yourself.

Whether you have a 3, 5 or 10 year plan, I would like to think that at the VERY very top of that list is for you to be alive and well, right?

Well, that means that taking care of your health – not just your physical health, but your mental, spiritual, social and emotional health as well – should be a daily priority for you.

So start introducing healthy habits into your days NOW!

I’m sure somewhere on your list of long-term goals, you’d also love to have some supportive people around to celebrate and enjoy life with when you do reach those goals, right?

So continue to nurture those relationships NOW! Don’t forget your role as the supportive friend, the reliable parent, the loving partner.

And if you feel like it is too much to handle - working on your personal long-term goals AND your professional ones simultaneously - then maybe you need to re-evaluate the balance in your life.

Now is the time to ensure there is balance as you move forward (especially if you are a young person).

Perfecting the right balance now is what will make it easier for you to manage challenges and obstacles down the line.

This is how you avoid burnout and set yourself up for longevity.

I also think now is a good time to address this term “success”, which I’ve tried my best to avoid using in this blog so far.

We often use the word “success” synonymously with wealth, fame and popularity, but I honestly couldn’t disagree more!

A person can have all the money in the world, all the friends in the world and all the physical freedom they desire and still not have peace.

Imagine that for a moment.

You have everything tangible that you could possibly desire, but your mind is simply not a rest.

What kind of life is that?

External “success” without peace means nothing and is just evidence of misplaced priorities and values.

I must add that actually achieving (and sustaining) balance in your life and in your mind is perhaps one of the most challenging things a human can possibly do.

I would even go as far as to argue that internal balance IS the true epitome of success, because once you have that, everything else is just the icing on the cake
