What is detachment? - click to go to instagram post

In the world of psychology, detachment often has negative connotations. However, when practised in a HEALTHY way, detachment is a superpower that we can all learn to cultivate...

Simply put, detachment is about letting go.

It is an emotional and mental practice.

You accept the ephemeral nature of life and adjust your expectations accordingly.

You stop trying to impose your will over circumstances you cannot control.

There is also a distinct difference between healthy and unhealthy detachment:

HEALTHY DETACHMENT
✓ Creates mental and emotional clarity helping with better decision-making
✓ Strengthens relationship with self and with others
✓ You guide situations towards favourable outcomes, while accepting that whatever will be will be
✓ Lives in the present - enjoys every moment

UNHEALTHY DETACHMENT
× Creates a sense of impending doom, leading to self-sabotage
× Negatively impacts the quality of relationships
× No longer cares about what happens, hence a very apathetic attitude
× Focusing on future loss inhibits the ability to enjoy the present moment
