Navigating the transition from unhealthy attachment to healthy detachment
In the first years of life, our development is hugely dependent upon the quality of attachments we form with those responsible for us. As we adjust and acclimatise to our surroundings, these attachments are exactly what give us stability.
When you have a healthy attachment from birth, it means much has been done to keep your external environment and your internal environment as stable as possible.
As we grow older, however, we take on the responsibility of maintaining the stability of our own internal environment.
With the solid foundation of healthy attachment and a functional environment, we learn to process our thoughts and feelings in a mature and efficient way.
We learn to become less attached to what we think & how we feel and become much better at self-observation.
This is what healthy detachment looks like.
Read blog, “What is detachment?”
Keeping a healthy distance from your emotions and thoughts (enough to avoid being completely consumed by them) helps you choose what you will give your time, energy & attention to.
Without this ability to detach, you will be overcome by the need for control.
Rather than your peace coming from within, it will almost entirely depend on external factors, such as people, your successes and failures, validation, expectations and so on.
Eventually, after years of operating under the dominion of external attachment, your mental and emotional energy would have been pulled in so many different directions that you will be left burnt out.
And if you still don’t learn how to detach in a healthy way, you will likely tip the scales to the other extreme, where you have nothing left except an apathetic attitude towards life and an unhealthy detachment towards everything that once mattered to you.
The key is to strike a healthy balance:
Live in the present. e in-tune enough to know what is best for you. But be detached enough to maintain your peace and happiness regardless of the cards you are dealt.
Being less attached diminishes your desire for control and puts you on the path of radical acceptance.
Life is so much more liberating when you accept it for what it is and make the most out of it!
