Opportunity of a Lifetime

Opportunities are all around us.
They are in endless supply.
Our perception, however, can actually make it seem like opportunities are scarce.
I think what contributes to this perception of scarcity is our vernacular.
Most of us rarely use the word ‘opportunity’, only ascribing the term to things we deem to be potentially life-changing, like getting a new job, a promotion, moving to a new area or attending a big event.
But in reality, the term ‘opportunity’ just refers to ‘a favourable set of circumstances that make it possible to do or achieve something’.
This definition can apply to so many things in your life.
You ‘get the opportunity’ to work and earn a stable income, you ‘get the opportunity’ to cook meals for yourself and your family, you ‘get the opportunity’ to take care of your home and so on and so forth.
Of course, when we are preoccupied, stressed and emotionally drained, it can be very difficult to reframe life in a positive way, but making that conscious decision to acknowledge everyday activities as opportunities gives you a completely different perspective.
It reminds you that some of the obligations that you consider laborious and burdensome might actually be a dream come true for another person, and perhaps they shouldn’t be taken for granted.
You might not enjoy cleaning your house, but a person who has struggled with homelessness would likely appreciate the opportunity to look after their home much more than they would complain about the chores.
Looking at things from a different perspective transforms what may have previously felt like a burden or a chore into feelings of gratitude and appreciation.
I would call these small moments ‘micro-opportunities’.
If we would only take the time to stop and pay attention, we would realise that our lives are filled to the brim with these micro-opportunities; it’s all about how we look at things.
When we’re children, we are much more curious and focused on the present moment. Our minds are constantly on the hunt for new opportunities to explore and learn about our environment.
Boredom was not just boredom; it was an opportunity to express creativity. Change was not inconvenience; it was a chance for adventure into the unknown.
Being older and wiser now, we could – and should – learn to view life in this way once again, and as we do so it is equally important to grow our discernment simultaneously.
Discernment is not just about identifying and avoiding what is bad for you. That’s only part of it.
The other part of discernment, which allows you to truly get the most out of life, is being able to identify what is good for you and leaning into it as much as possible.
As you gain experience and put yourself out there more, you will come across as potential opportunities that aren’t necessarily the right opportunity for you.
This is where discernment will prove to be crucial.
You must be able to distinguish between what is a simply a ‘good opportunity’ on the surface versus an ‘ideal opportunity for you’.
This distinction is so much more important than I can articulate.
A good opportunity can be for anyone, but the ideal opportunity for you fits right into your future plans.
When deciding whether to take advantage of an opportunity, you must take your future into account. You have to think about where you want to be in life versus where you are right now and how this opportunity will propel you in that direction.
You also have to consider who you are right now versus who you want to be in the future and how this opportunity will push you to become that version of yourself.
When you view things through this lens, you will naturally exclude certain opportunities that don’t align with your path.
Having a purpose and a plan puts you in a position of control.
Opportunities will no longer be things you desperately chase, rather, they will be what you analyse and assess for compatibility before accepting.
You will no longer fear a lack of opportunity; you will begin to anticipate the arrival of the right one.
The more you select opportunities based on your future growth, the more you’ll find that ideal opportunities will be presented to you in perfect alignment with your journey.
