Judging success

We all spend so much of our lives judging how others live. I often wonder how much further along we each would be in our own lives if we directed the energy we use for judging others into our personal development.
Passing judgement on others is a part of our human nature – it’s a survival instinct. Analysing how others behave in order to determine whether it is beneficial to be around them is incredibly important when it comes to discernment.
HOWEVER (and yes I have to type that in all caps), what we have normalised in today’s society goes far beyond a need for discernment.
Nowadays, instead of judging others from a place of objectivity and logic, we tend to judge and put people in boxes in order to make ourselves feel comfortable.
We base our judgements on our own limited understanding, experiences and background, not realising that the world might actually operate differently to how we see it.
For instance, the idea you have of success may seem universal to you, but when you share with others you may find that they have a completely contrasting vision of it.
People think differently. They have their own minds, their own opinions and their own perception, just like you.
What you place as a priority in your own life could be completely insignificant to another person, and there’s nothing wrong with that!
It doesn’t make them a bad person, nor does it doesn’t make you a bad person. It just means you think differently.
This is why we can’t necessarily judge others based on our own standards.
I know it can be so tempting to judge others when they make decisions, especially when those decisions don’t align with the status quo.
But if so few people are actually successful, then it’s likely that the decisions that would lead a person to success would be unorthodox, right?
So why do we automatically side eye the person who is doing things differently?
Even when we haven’t defined or attained success for ourselves, we still question what someone else is doing in their own life. It’s a little crazy when you think about it.
Maybe we’re not really judging the other person.
Maybe we’re actually judging ourselves through that person.
Maybe judging them is a buffer that distracts us from the fact that we’re not sure of our own journey just yet.
You see, success is not about doing things by society’s standards or to please anybody else.
Success is about finding your own path.
And sometimes finding your own path means that you’ll have to put up with the loud gasps of disapproval.
But what makes it worth it in the end are the silent whispers of acceptance from your inner voice when you walk confidently in your own path.
Your path to success will only be revealed as you take each step.
You won’t know what it looks like until you start moving forwards.
Following societal norms won’t move you forwards any faster, neither will being jealous of others.
Ignore the judgement, focus on yourself and keep moving forwards.
