Is your creativity just for show?

I believe that, in our own special ways, we each have unique creative abilities.

So if we all have creative gifts, how are we supposed to use them?

Should our self-expression be a performance we put on for others to ogle at and judge?

Or is our ability to engage in creative self-expression supposed to serve a more meaningful purpose?

Perhaps self-expression has more to do with the creative individual and less to do with the consumers of their work.

Our society tends to reward and incentivise visibility above creativity. So when we use external validation as the compass that guides our self-expression, it taints the purity of our works; and it essentially becomes diluted by the opinions of others, who were unlikely to have been involved in the depth of the creative process to begin with.

This very mindset is also what makes us abandon our creativity when we feel like we aren’t getting “enough” recognition (whatever that means).

I think we should re-frame the typical beliefs we hold around this topic.

We have to make a shift in where our values lie.

Every great thing you accomplish does not necessarily need to be shared with the world. Some things should be kept for yourself.

Of course, you need discernment, but even more than that you have to value the numerous personal benefits that come with self-expression ABOVE the potential praise and recognition that may come from those around us.

When we place our focus inward, we give ourselves the gift of freedom.

In order to so, we must have methods in place to drown out the noise of external opinions, such as objective self-reflection.

When you recognise your areas of strength and weakness, you can lay a foundation for yourself that shows you what you are great at and what you are working towards.

Doing so allows you to stay committed to your self-expression regardless of whether those around you are in support of your efforts or not.

In addition to this, you can also practise regularly rewarding yourself for the efforts that you put in as well as the results you earn.

This reinforces and demonstrates the value you place on your own creative works.

So remember that, because of this, your self-expression will never be in vain.
