How do you “figure out who you are”?

There’s been a whole movement in the personal development world, urging everyone to “figure out who they are”.
I, of course, am a major proponent of this very same idea.
But how exactly does one go about this journey of self-discovery?
How can this be turned into PRACTICAL steps that can be followed?
Well, for one, the very first step to getting to know yourself is to understand who you are NOT.
This might seem like an unpopular opinion, but who we are – our true essence – is actually much simpler than we believe it to be.
The issue is that our understanding of self is obfuscated by the plethora of things we attach to our identities.
Developing clarity here involves completely stripping away every and anything that is contrary.
This means going through a continuous process of elimination, as you grow and develop. It means allowing all false identities, narratives and beliefs to fall away from you, even if it means embracing the unknown.
This process can be the most difficult and confusing part of this journey of self-discovery, because we spend our entire lives in an acquisition phase, picking up names, possessions jobs, roles etc to define ourselves with.
So when the time comes for us to detach ourselves from these illusions, we can lose our sense of self.
Although it can be challenging to let go, holding on to what does not reflect who we are can be even more detrimental.
Forcing yourself to remain attached to old beliefs, ideas, values and habits keeps you in a perpetual identity prison.
Doing so keeps you trapped.
You are choosing to surround yourself with barriers to your own self-discovery.
The quicker you embrace what’s on the other side of this very necessary detachment process, the quicker you will learn about who you are on the inside.
