4 Ways Authentic People Respond to Being Disrespected

Being disrespected can catch you offguard, but authentic people have a few tricks up their sleeve as to how to handle this...

1) With Understanding

Although it's easy to take things personally, authentic people understand that disrespect comes from a place of insecurity. They have the capacity to see the situation from the other person's point of view and are open to the fact that their behaviour didn't necessarily warrant the disrespect, but that the other person has more work to do on themselves.

2) Silence

Many times, silence is the best way to respond to disrespect. Authentic people know this better than anyone. It sufficiently conveys disapproval and actually forces the person and those around to think about what was said and why. They know that the disrespect reflects a lot more on the person giving it than receiving it.

3) Setting Boundaries

In other moments, where an assertive disposition is required, authentic people have no trouble standing up for themselves and correcting disrespectful behaviour from anyone. They firmly set boundaries the very first time they are crossed. This is not only a lesson for the disrespectful individual, but also for any onlookers.

4) Distance

If the disrespect indicates a deep level of pre-judgement and malice, authentic people don't necessarily feel the need to respond or keep that person in their orbit. Where they can, they will just distance themself from that negative person and think of them no further.
